Duelpass Shortage: Is The Well THAT Dry?

Posted by Yogizilla on March 20, 2007

We at YDP have received a few messages regarding our recent Yu-Gi-Oh! Online Duelpass shortages. Close friends and supporters have been nudging us for quite some time. Well, I assure you that our lack of inventory is not due to a lack of restocking efforts – there really is just that much demand… and the supply is lacking. Really, this metaphorical well has run dry (sorta).

Anyone or anything down there? Hellooooooooo??

That dry well in the desert serves as a perfect metaphor of how barren the distributor network is right now, for the most part. It works like thi: Konami comes out with something new and then they decide that the older stuff doesn’t have market value anymore so they eventually discontinue it. Most of the distributors out there are very small shops with virtually little or no visibility. There may be thousands of such sites, all with their own humble piece of the pie, but they are in their own little worlds. We would like to purchase their stocks, free them of their burdens, and make more Duelpasses available to our customers but, like I said, they are hidden away in some far-off recess of the Internet.

As you may have noticed, not many retail stores carry the Yu-Gi-Oh! Online products and, if they do, it is in a limited supply. We in the web distribution biz then become your front-line suppliers and, believe me, we appreciate the support; alas, we share our space with a lot of scammers, as we continue to warn our fellow gamers. For these very reasons, we are trying to connect with other distributors so that we can help each other out and better serve the international market. Ideally, we can become the premiere hub for all Yu-Gi-Oh! Online distributors and support channels. If you come across any potentially-reliable vendors, let us know and we’ll check them out for you. We’re pretty good about doing our homework on suppliers since we are looking for them ourselves.

Now, you may ask, “Why not order from Konami direct?” Well, we do but even they are on backorder. You see, they have to order their product from another provider, the folks that actual print the cards with unique codes, package them, box them, and ship them out. In fact, for the most part, any product shipped from Konami actually comes from a local distribution hub, a drop-ship location, which simply means it is a warehouse that ships directly to distributors and resellers.

If there is anything you are looking for, do not be afraid to ask us. The rule of thumb is this: if the pack you are looking for is around 3 or 4 series behind (i.e. Pack1-3) it is probably discontinued. That means that, if you really want it, you’ll have to wait until we find someone who has what you are looking for. Anything on our site that provides a Backorder button will be ordered on-demand from our existing supply channels which can take anywhere from 5-7 business days (usually much faster). Again, if all of you out there can help us find some good suppliers, we’ll be more than happy to work with them and provide a service to the entire Yu-Gi-Oh! Online community.

In other news, don’t forget that the new Yu-Gi-Oh! World Championship 2007 for Nintendo DS is coming out soon but, in the meantime, you can pre-order that and play with the Yu-Gi-Oh! GX Ultimate Beginner’s Pack. I recommend them both and, though we do not sell either one, we will certainly be getting those things for ourselves and our kids (for those of us that haven’t yet, that is). As our partners at Yu-Gi-Oh! World mention, the special thing about hte new Yu-Gi-Oh! game is full support for Wi-Fi (finally) so this will definitely be a welcomed addition to even the most humble of Yu-Gi-Oh! collections – expect us to get a friends list area started once this game is released and we all get into it! If you are stoked about these things, let us know – comment away!

how in the world could there be a shortage of digital numbers? I believe it tho because people in north america, mainly retail outlets like wallmart and other whom carry yugioh cards, have not even heard of such things as duel passes. Kind of a shock that the company was so stupid to wait so long just to put this game out, and finally when they do they really blitz their nuts off on doing it properly. Like all good things if u look a little closer it turns to complete shit with the overabundance of “cons” and the lack of “pros”. Maybe if konami gets their heads outa their asses they could start running things like they should be, i mean im 16 and could obviously do better research for their company then the hired and trained well paid professionals.

    Hey guys!

First I would like to say that you are doing a Great job! I understand the “supply-and-demand” speech. And I’m patiently waiting for my 4 week backordered codes to be sent. But I need to ask this question…… Are all the orders made after March on backorder, and your just going down the list in order and giving what is availiable?; or is it that if you pay by credit card your likely to “jump ahead” of the waiting list and recieve your codes sooner?

I ask these questions because I have asked gamers online when and how they purchacsed thier duelpasses… and most of them responded by credit card.

I live in northern Ontario, Canada so the closest and fastest way for me to buy duelpasses is in New York, US. I have been able to weed out the scammers(the hard way of course), and I’m VERY happy with YugiohDuelpass.net, cause I can send money orders. Are things going to get back to normal or is this the just the start of a VERY VERY VERY long waiting game?
