Yu-Gi-Oh! Box Buster, Shonen Jump, and Shenanigans

Posted by Yogizilla on February 18, 2012

Yo gamers and geeks!

So I finally buckled down and decided to start recording videos since most don’t have the patience to read my long-winded posts (understandable).  I have a great webcam but my lighting stinks.  There’s going to be lots of editing before those hit the interwebz.

Until I get those videos out, I wanted to share my recent spree of Yu-Gi-Oh! purchases.  There’s quite a bit so I’ll just focus on the following purchases:

  • 4 Order Of Chaos booster packs
  • 1 Generation Force Special Edition box set

Before I dig into some of the goodies I got, there are three things you need to know before buying Yu-Gi-Oh! cards:

  1. Yu-Gi-Oh! Special Edition box sets are often cheaper than buying booster packs and come with guaranteed super/ultra rare cards.
  2. Being a Shonen Jump subscriber means you get access to awesome duel strategies and core deck builds..  Plus FREE Yu-Gi-Oh! cards – w00t!!
  3. While buying single cards will guarantee you get exactly what you need, it’s often more cost-effective to go with structure/starter decks, lots, tins, or box sets.

Speaking of Shonen Jump, I am still disappointed they are going 100% digital but it seems they’ll still send out the occasional freebies, primarily for new subscribers and renewals.  Oh well..  At least I got this card in the second to last issue (EVER??) of Shonen Jump:

Shonen Jump LIMITED EDITION X-Saber Souza

Thanks to this Shonen Jump Yu-Gi-Oh! freebie, I'm actually rebuilding and playing my X-Saber deck again!

Read on for Yu-Gi-Oh! box buster fun and other shenanigans!

The Economy of Gaming: Why Paying To Play Is A GOOD Thing

Posted by Yogizilla on May 8, 2011

Hello Yu-Gi-Oh! fans, video game geeks, and strategy buffs!

Today’s article will be a bit of a break from the very Yu-Gi-Oh! and Japanese-centric stuff we tend to have here on DPO (I think Rin should keep every geek out there very happy). I want to discuss an issue that affects all of us, yet very few of us truly grasp: the economy of gaming.

A while ago I read a very moving article about how used games hurt the gaming industry. Thing is, used games only represent only one facet of what is really a much greater issue. That issue is that games are becoming more expensive to make as games are made with high production value (i.e. nice eye candy) in mind. With the cost of publishing, distributing, marketing, and all sorts of overhead on top of it all, it’s not just about developing a good video game: you need a massive budget or at least a really good plan to have significant market penetration. The costs of putting out a game can sneak up on developers, especially the small and indie shops, which means that the cost needs to be passed on to the consumer or off-set somehow. Developers have mouths to feed too, you know!

Sadly, there are gamers that do not understand basic economic rules such as supply-and-demand and marketing overhead. They want games to be cheap and, sometimes, free. Surely, we all like free stuff so I ain’t knocking you bargain hunters out there. As a gamer, I love when I can find a great game that I can involve my gaming group, The Nipples of Fate (NoF), in without having to pay a single red cent. It makes easier for everyone to jump on-board or at least try it out.

The issue here is that, as games become more expensive, many online gaming experiences are becoming more exclusive. Video games are reaching more of a luxury status as next-gen systems become over-priced and, at times, scarce. If you’re old like me, the price points we’ve grown accustomed to have gone from $39.99-49,99 to $59.99-69.99 and, when you’re on a tight budget, that extra $20 can be better spent on gas, public transportation, or lunch money, depending on your needs. Of course, you have to factor in inflation, which really makes video games costs about the same for the past three decades.

Used games form the PS2-XBox-Gamecube generation, thanks to GayGamer.net

Apparently, used games were not enough to keep Circuit City afloat. (Courtesy of GayGamer.net)

2008 Address – New Year, New Fun!

Posted by Yogizilla on January 1, 2008

Hello all!

I wanted to take this opportunity to thank everyone for the continued support and love! We love getting the cool content, links, and other ideas from you guys. Going into 2008, we all seem to have the same ideas and concerns about the direction of Yu-Gi-Oh! Online. Believe me: I am with you guys and gals – something needs to change! While we still have our shop open and love the entire Yu-Gi-Oh! universe (especially the unique community), I know that my Yu-Gi-Oh! dueling has declined in recent months. Hopefully 2008 will be different…

Adam, David, Moko, Yali, Taiyo, Lola_Girl, KiNgDeeM, and all our returning visitors… This one is dedicated to you! ^_^

( BTW,  why is it that some people say they duel only for money yet they won’t pay to duel online?  Seems like they may not be all that good if they’re not willing to put any money on the line.  Everyone knows that the most competitive tournaments are all in pay leagues with high stakes! =oP )

Yu-Gi-Oh! Online Duel Challenges – Get Ready!!!

Posted by Yogizilla on May 15, 2007

The stage for a great new era for Yu-Gi-Oh! has been set in 2007. With Yu-Gi-Oh! Online Duel Evolution providing new content every month and the recent release of Yu-Gi-Oh! World Championship 2007, we can see a deliberate effort to bring the game to different types of gamers, not just the hardcore TCG players and Neutral Ground hobbits. I love how the online community for YGOO is evolving. There’s something for everyone. If you want free, cheesy duels, you can find one of many interest groups out there that do webcam duels but, if you want the complete events and community, there is no better choice than Yu-Gi-Oh! Online; yeah, I may be a bit biased because I just so happen to play the game and love every last bit of it!

With the coming Gunslinger events on Yu-Gi-Oh! Online May 18th and 19th it’s time to prepare! Tricky’s Magic and The Tricky are the cards to be awarded for 6-win and 7-win streaks, accordingly. If you are unfamiliar with how Duelist Trial and Gunslinger work, it’s simple: Duelist Trial awards you a rank depending on how many wins you get whereas Gunslinger is all about survival, or how long you can win without losing. In Gunslinger, the longer you last, the better the cards you get after each battle. If you lose lots of battle during the Gunslinger event, expect to get many copies of the same card. No worries – chances are you can trade them with some newbie later on!

Yugi VS. Kaiba: Who Wins??

Shonen Jump features the original unstoppable duelists of the Yu-Gi-Oh! universe. Years later, who would come out on top? We vote for Yugi.

Oh shizzle, Gunslinger is around the corner… It’s time to duel!

Assorted Flavors: Our Web Site Move, Paying By Check, and More!

Posted by Yogizilla on April 5, 2007

Hello all! I have a few assorted updates so get ready…

First and foremost, I have to say that I like the crazy programming Cartoon Network has been doing lately. They followed up Miyazaki’s Spirited Away with a marathon of Perfect Hair Forever, one of the most pointless yet strangely entertaining shows EVER! For our older viewers out there, it features lots of adult inuendo to keep even the biggest deviants happy. LOL… Anywho, what’s up with the new Tom on Toonami? I see lots of people out there searching for information about the recent changes. I can’t say I am a fan personally but it’s cool that he has a whole crew now; I mean, life in outer space would be lonely otherwise!

In other news, we are moving our web site to new servers so there may be some interruption and delay in product delivery. Those that ordered anything this week should be more affected than those that placed orders in previous weeks. We’re working around the clock to get things fixed up so be patient, folks! If you can’t reach us via e-mail, I check our blog much more often now so feel free to use this.

Illiteracy spreads throughout America!

So it seems illiteracy is spreading like wildfire, as the above cartoon depicts. We have received a few checks that are not made out to the right people and, as such, we cannot do anything with them. Please read instructions carefully as it’ll save you time in the long run. If you pay by check or money order, please be sure to make it out to:

Duelpass Shortage: Is The Well THAT Dry?

Posted by Yogizilla on March 20, 2007

We at YDP have received a few messages regarding our recent Yu-Gi-Oh! Online Duelpass shortages. Close friends and supporters have been nudging us for quite some time. Well, I assure you that our lack of inventory is not due to a lack of restocking efforts – there really is just that much demand… and the supply is lacking. Really, this metaphorical well has run dry (sorta).

Anyone or anything down there? Hellooooooooo??

That dry well in the desert serves as a perfect metaphor of how barren the distributor network is right now, for the most part. It works like thi: Konami comes out with something new and then they decide that the older stuff doesn’t have market value anymore so they eventually discontinue it. Most of the distributors out there are very small shops with virtually little or no visibility. There may be thousands of such sites, all with their own humble piece of the pie, but they are in their own little worlds. We would like to purchase their stocks, free them of their burdens, and make more Duelpasses available to our customers but, like I said, they are hidden away in some far-off recess of the Internet.

WARNING: Yu-Gi-Oh! Scams, Myths, and Free Duels

Posted by Yogizilla on March 8, 2007

We recently received several messages at YDP regarding people promising free duelpasses and free duels. Some folks have also asked me where to buy Yu-Gi-Oh! Online Duelpasses. The response to Konami’s free duel lobby initiative has been tremendous as well. I have tackled a lot of the issues thereof but, just to revisit the core issues here, I’d like to issue a general scam warning and myth debunker.

First and foremost, Yu-Gi-Oh! Online no longer features a free duel lobby at the current point in time. This was a promotion and was meant to be temporary. We do not know if they have plans to bring it back as a seasonal feature or something available to new or low-level players only but, when we do get confirmation on this, we’ll let you all know. For now, the Yu-Gi-Oh! Online Duelpass system has been made much more accessible and affordable so we hope it encourages more new players!

Some sites have promised free duelpasses or unrealistically-good discounts. I have scoured the Net myself both as a customer (before I became a Yu-Gi-Oh! reseller) and a business owner. I have yet to find huge price drops and steady supplies from a reliable business. All the sites promise freebies have been scams aimed at stealing passwords, installing spyware, or doing other malicious things to the systems of their visitors. Be wary of any promises of free duelpasses and the like – those are all SCAMS!
