Box Busters, Yu-Gi-Oh! Tournaments in Augusta/CSRA, and MORE!

Posted by Yogizilla on January 24, 2012

It’s official…

Yu-Gi-Oh! still rocks my socks!

I have been uber busy (and distracted) but the past few months have been so much fun.  I’ve had the opportunity to jam with my kids and Yu-Gi-Oh! Fans of all ages, thanks in part to the Augusta Book Exchange and their Sunday Yu-Gi-Oh! Tournaments.

Box busters are still in the plans but what I am looking to do is buy a few boxes of current-gen Yu-Gi-Oh! cards and share some of our personal favorites.  We are looking at Order of Chaos, Generation Force, and Hidden Arsenal booster packs, amongst others.  That will be in the more distant future, though.

For a look at some of my more recent Yu-Gi-Oh! faves and “mini busters”, check out these posts:

Yu-Gi-Oh! deck building is still one of my favorite things but it’s tons of fun to try out new recipes too!

If you happen to be in the Augusta, Georgia or CSRA (Central Savannah River Area), I invite you to come check out the Augusta Book Exchange in Martinez, near the Bobby Jones Expressway Wal-Mart (which we like to call Wally World since it’s like a amusement park for some of us locals LOL).

This place reminds me of my favorite geek shop in my hometown of NYC: The Compleat Strategist.  InsiderPages describes TCS as a place where it’s cozy and easily to lose oneself for hours.  I agree and the Augusta Book Exchange is the same experience.

Duel School: How To Play Yu-Gi-Oh!

Posted by Yogizilla on March 15, 2007

It took a little while longer than I had hoped but I finally completed the Duel School page, which will be a great resource for new (yes, learn how to play Yu-Gi-Oh! on this new page) and casual duelists alike. Heck, this approach to dueling may give even old school Yu-Gi-Oh! players a fresh, new perspective. I personally hope it helps debunk some of the myths of the game while showing people that the game is easy to learn, fun to play, and good for anyone that likes TCG’s or strategic games in general. I always say this: Yu-Gi-Oh! is a game that can be easily learned yet offers enough complexity for even the most advanced gaming strategists.

I enjoyed putting together this information though, I must admit, WordPress was being very naughty. I almost lost all my work somehow and then the formatting was stripped out of everything. I will be polishing up the page a bit and hopefully citing more external resources to help you with your homework. Speaking of homework, I will also be finding ways to tie in the Duel Challenges page to give all of you out there a fresh new way to learn and re-learn the game. I think everyone could stand to learn more by returning to the basics, really!

As part of the launch of this major new section, I am asking folks in the gaming community to guest blog for us, help us collect Yu-Gi-Oh! resources, and share any feedback you may have. Promoting our efforts definitely goes a long way! Perhaps if we all work a little bit here and there, on a consistent basis, we can hit the 25K mark by the end of this month and set a more aggressive goal for next month. At this rate, I think we can very well do it.

All I know is that all this fun stuff has caught my partner-in-crime’s eye so hopefully Ugocean will grace us with his presence. He’s been terribly busy with back-end stuff and some other projects we have going on. We’ve pretty much decided that anything that is PR, customer service, or content-related is my department. He’s enjoying his time with servers, analytics, PHP, and a guy named Jobi. We love you Ugocean!

Thanks to all of you that have sent me e-mail messages and comments here on WordPress, MySpace, and other places. Some of you have requested training so I hope our duel school gives you a good place to start. If you want to set up an online meetup, your best bet is e-mailing me or using our challenges area. Don’t be shy: I love receiving and responding to messages, so long as they are nice and not mere spam! I am looking forward to your response on this initiative and the other goodies we are working on. Good times, good times… =o)

The 25K Campaign: Now You Can Make Yu-Gi-Oh! More Popular

Posted by Yogizilla on March 14, 2007

The other day I decided it had been a while since I ran some extensive web analytics and I must say that I am pleased to see that sites I maintain, contribute to, and support all dominate the top of the search results.  Looking at the numbers and seeing the interest in the game grow right before my eyes (the truth is in the pudding, after all) really inspired me. Aside from making me want to duel more, it makes me want to continue my work as a sort of Yu-Gi-Oh! Online evangelist. Spread the good news of Yu-Gi-Oh, my brothers and sisters – spread it far and wide!

I know this sounds like a journal entry and, for the most part it is, but it is also a call to duty. Your call to duty is this: spread the word about this blog to everyone you know and everyone they know. Our blog does not have ads and is completely pure (the way a blog should be, IMHO). The only profit we stand to make is just making the Yu-Gi-Oh! community that much stronger. Sure, it’ll help if people click through to partner sites but sales conversions over blogs is hardly a viable strategy. I can sincerely say that we are campaigning for the good of Yu-Gi-Oh! here, not mere personal profit; the more traffic we get, the more exposure the game gets.  A major portion of our traffic comes from keyword searches that aren’t even specific to Yu-Gi-Oh! sometimes.  As a result, I am adding more tags here as we speak!

It’s funny but, when we first started this blog, it was meant to be a sales support channel for DPO then, when YDP and DPO merged, it evolved naturally. People started to give us great response about our unique perspective on the game and they liked our friendly approach to things. If you go to sites like TCGplayer.com, they have more of the typical elitist writers. If you aren’t winning well-known tournaments, you can’t even be their friends (good luck getting an e-mail response from them too). We’re trying to keep the snobbery out of the game and making the Yu-Gi-Oh! community more inviting because, to the non-dueling world, we are mostly disgruntled, anti-social nerds yet it is VERY much about the social interaction, the gathering, to us at YDP-DPO and many people we know!

Adventures in Dueling: Yogi Explores the Dark World

Posted by Yogizilla on March 3, 2007

I figured I would post once again while I am on a roll here.  Today was a nice end-cap to a great Duelist Trial.  I wish I didn’t have all this work to do but at least I am being good and not letting the game totally distract me…  Well, not as much as I usually can.  I enjoyed a good amount of DT action today and, I must say, I prefer DT over Gunslinger though both flavors are very tasty to the duelist palette, metaphorically speaking, of course.

I see that there are still a lot of the same decks out there though some people are running more advanced decks such as insane burn and last turn decks. YGOO2 brought with it a great affinity to the Dark World cards and, I must say, this is a trend that I really think is cool. One of my favorite things about my favorite cards (yes, that is very much redunant) is having flexibility. For our purposes, when I refer to a card’s or deck’s flexibility, I am referring to how adaptable the cards are. Many YGO cards are deceptively simplistic in their description but actually serve deeper purposes than what they may initially let off.

Yu-Gi-Oh! Gunslinger, Duelist Trial, and MORE – EVOLVED!!!

Posted by Yogizilla on March 3, 2007

Yes, it’s true: your favorite official Yu-Gi-Oh! Online events are now better than ever. Just today, the first round of Duelist Trial completed but there will be more goodness to come. The beauty of Konami’s approach is that it is more newbie-friendly. They are practically giving away good cards now so that it all comes down to the best strategies winning, not the most-stacked decks, so to speak. It is because of this that DT wins can win you up to 3 cards per round while Gunslinger rounds now win you up to 5 cards per round, which is significantly more than before.

Now you can win less matches in a row and get the special cards that everyone raves about. You can always tell what these special cards are when you see most people whipping out new cards in their decks. I remember when the special card was Spirit Reaper and that cheese started. Then there was Injection Fairy Lily. Those cards are now staples in many deck builds so it goes to show you how these events stimulate more competition.

Don’t forget: 3/20 (that’s THIS month) marks the first round of the Championship Tournament. This is essentially the first major tournament of the new year (whether you go by the Chinese calendar or otherwise). If you are particularly competitive, now is the time to stock up on Duel Points and start tweaking your tourney-ready deck. There’s still plenty of time and I’m sure Konami will surprise us with more events. Don’t forget that events take place on Japan Standard Time (JST) so, usually, the end-of-week events take place around late-night Thursday through early-morning Saturday, for those that may be missing out.

In other news, Booster Pack 37 was just released on 3/2 (yesterday) so be sure to explore the contents of this new, exciting deck. Dragon decks are becoming popular once again (then again, they’ve always been spiffy) and it seems that people are intrigued due to the nice wrapper art. Expect updated card lists (a’la DuelPassOnline) or at least some useful card previews and spotlights. All in due time… For now, why don’t you see if you can meet fellow Yu-Gi-Oh! players in YDP’s chat room (YAY Java)?
