Full Metal Alchemist, Gears of War 3 First Impressions, Shonen Jump, and Other Assorted Birthday Fun

Posted by Yogizilla on April 21, 2011

Hello DPO fans!

Everyone’s been pretty quiet and I suppose I’m not helping. This week, aside from battling hordes of Locusts and Cogs in the Gears of War 3 beta, I’ve been resting up trying to fight this nasty bug that’s got me sneezing and coughing up my lungs (I suppose cigarettes do not help either). It sucks cause there are so many projects and video games I have to catch up on, along with all the awesome Anime and Manga on Netflix and Shonen Jump!

Luckily, I’ve managed to be somewhat productive, helping my partner re-launch the Mundane Chatter web site. We recorded two episodes so we’re ahead on that. Don’t worry: we’ll be making episodes shorter for the sake of impatient and easily-distracted geeks like us out there! We’ve been discussing TV shows, Anime, and video games old and new so check us out and let me know whatcha think!

I re-experienced the original Full Metal Alchemist series. It’s nothing short of epic. Next up is the movie, which I’ll get in the mail next week, courtesy of, you guessed it: NETFLIX! I actually thought Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood was a new series but it turns out it’s more of a reboot more closely matching the Manga’s storyline. With Slayers, Rin, and other Anime on the radar, they’ll be plenty of distractions for this geek!

My current video games are a mix of old and new games including Call of Duty: Black Ops and Modern Warfare 2, GTA IV, Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D’s Decade Duels, Homefront, Crysis 2, and Starcraft 2. I’ll be getting Mortal Kombat, Portal 2, and Brink most likely very soon. Currently, I’m trying to beat Bulletstorm and, let me tell you: this game is beautiful (I’d say it’s up there with Battlefield: Bad Company 2, Gears of War 3, and Crysis 2, which I think are good-looking games, IMHO)! The scripting is pretty hilarious too.

I just got the latest Shonen Jump in the mail and I love the current focus on Bleach, Naruto, and Yu-Gi-Oh! though I’m not too keen on One Piece. The June/July 2011 Shonen Jump has a huge Naruto section including the latest official English translations of Shippuden AND classic Naruto! w00t!

Time for some quick Shonen Jump spoilers. Naruto finally gains control over the nine-tails demon fox. He is officially a beast now with the ability to control his chakra and use sage mode efficiently. He also gains his father’s powers.. Yellow flash teleportation FTW! Alas, he still lacks discipline and finesse – got to love Naruto and his blind charisma!

In Bleach there’s not too much action right now. The Soul Society has restructured with new promotions and such. I can’t wait to see what happens next.. I’m really behind on Bleach!

Yusei gets his butt kicked by Jack, the supposed “duel king”. Apparently, Jack’s “sense” is too much for him and he gets punked. Still, Yusei is like a modern-day Yami Yugi so I’m rooting for him! Jack had a vicious finishing combo, including some moves that prevented synchro summons and controlled monster positions – OUCH! It’s always brutal when your opponent has full control.

Now, let me talk about the Gears of War 3 beta. I haven’t been a huge fan of the series even though I love the Unreal Engine (Unreal and Unreal Tournament were two of my favorite shooters of all time without a doubt). Co-op is always fun on GoW but online play just didn’t do it for me. Gears of War 3 seems a lot more polished and fast-paced so I may very well get down with this installment.

The Gears of War 3 multiplayer beta plays a bit like Halo but with more realistic damage, which is great in my book. I love the contextual quick-action controls and, as always, executions are tons of fun (even better than tea-bagging fallen opponents). Folks that are tired of excessive camping brought about by the killstreak mechanic in other popular shooters will be pleased to know that this is an FPS where you have to keep moving, hold down choke points, and work as a team. SCORE!

My one complaint about Gears of War 3 online versus play would have to be that the “power weapons” can be a bit broken. One-shot Gnasher kills can get old quick. As such, the team that defends key points and power-ups tends to win. That said, the action is frentic, fast, and fun. It’s a nice change of pace for a genre with so many entries, especially this year.

So far, I’m only a lowly Level 3 “conscript”. I’ve enjoyed Team Deathmatch. Each team has limited lives which keeps rounds moving quickly. Matchmaking works seamlessly. You can hop into a game in progress in mere minutes. There are some issues with host divergence which brings back the old argument that PC online play is still better, thanks to dedicated servers and player-created content.

With Brink on the horizon, I wonder how well-received Gears of War 3 will be for the masses. I’m all about online play so the story doesn’t do much for me (sadly, I lose interest in campaign/singleplayer modes too easily for any game). To that end, I feel that Gears of War 3 delivers and could very well be a Halo killer, so to speak. More importantly, it keeps the old Unreal Tournament vibe going with gory kills, bot opponents, and lightning-fast action.

All and all, it’s a game worth checking out. If you want early beta access, you’ll need to own Bulletstorm or pre-order Gears of War 3. The beta opens to the public on May 24, I believe. Come find me and my crazy NoF fellows on XBox LIVE. Just add Yogizilla and NoF Roster to meet some cool people and GAME ON!

Phew.. That was a lot to cover in one post.. What are you all playing out there? Any good Anime recommendations? Let me know. I love chatting with my fellow social gaming and Anime/Manga geeks!

Netflix Ramps Up Anime Streaming and the Endless Distractions Continue

Posted by Yogizilla on April 14, 2011

Well, some of you have been wondering what I’ve been up to and, really, it’s the usual being inundated with work and getting distracted. As usual, XBox LIVE is a great escape from work. Been getting back into CoD Modern Warfare 2 and Black Ops (surprisingly, Black Ops has grown onto me though I still prefer Infinity Ward’s approach, in spite of tons of customization and gameplay options in the Treyarch product) with new and old clanmates from NoF, my gaming clan. Crysis 2 has been fun but BOY is that game frustrating!

Possibly the biggest distraction is the massive Netflix Anime expansion. About two or three months back, Anime was only available on DVD or Blu-Ray mailings. Not so now. Netflix has tons of streaming Anime options including Trigun, Berserk, Rin, Blood+, Bleach, Naruto, and Full Metal Alchemist, to name a “few”.

Rin is particularly interesting. The release date shows as 2008 but the subject matter seems dated, especially if you consider the computer references (128MB RAM 300MB HDD is no longer top of the line, folks). Regardless, it is a fun Anime. It’s a little graphic so, kids, go back to Dragon Ball Z, please.

Rin is about two immortal girls that run a private investigation company. They take on strange cases, battle supernatural beings, and make lots of friends along the way. If nudity is your bag, Rin has that too but the plot is substantial, I promise. The Anime series is beautifully drawn too.

If you need more reasons to procrastinate, check out the new, ever-growing Netflix Anime Instant Play collection. Netflix has stepped things up due to the competition from Amazon, Hulu, and others. If Anime is not your thing, add me on XBox LIVE. Yogizilla is my name there though I’m considering changing to YogizillaNoF to fully rep my clan.

The Anime catch-up has definitely been a time killer for me but, fear not: I am still very much excited to bring you my very first online Yu-Gi-Oh! Box Buster. I got tons of cards I have yet to reveal for myself and you, my AWESOME loyal readers. I’ve been focusing on my Y3B blog but I’ll be switching content back and forth, as well as cross-promoting.

There’s still tons of stuff in the pipelines including new Mundane Chatter v2.0 Podcast Episodes, XBox 360 Hardware Mini-Reviews (just got a Turtle Beach X31 and I LOVE it.. looking to get a Razer Onza TE but they’re hard to come by), and MORE! Leave a comment and let me know what games, Anime, and other fun has been consuming your life – maybe we can join forces and veg together!
