Hello DPO fans!
Everyone’s been pretty quiet and I suppose I’m not helping. This week, aside from battling hordes of Locusts and Cogs in the Gears of War 3 beta, I’ve been resting up trying to fight this nasty bug that’s got me sneezing and coughing up my lungs (I suppose cigarettes do not help either). It sucks cause there are so many projects and video games I have to catch up on, along with all the awesome Anime and Manga on Netflix and Shonen Jump!
Luckily, I’ve managed to be somewhat productive, helping my partner re-launch the Mundane Chatter web site. We recorded two episodes so we’re ahead on that. Don’t worry: we’ll be making episodes shorter for the sake of impatient and easily-distracted geeks like us out there! We’ve been discussing TV shows, Anime, and video games old and new so check us out and let me know whatcha think!
I re-experienced the original Full Metal Alchemist series. It’s nothing short of epic. Next up is the movie, which I’ll get in the mail next week, courtesy of, you guessed it: NETFLIX! I actually thought Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood was a new series but it turns out it’s more of a reboot more closely matching the Manga’s storyline. With Slayers, Rin, and other Anime on the radar, they’ll be plenty of distractions for this geek!
My current video games are a mix of old and new games including Call of Duty: Black Ops and Modern Warfare 2, GTA IV, Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D’s Decade Duels, Homefront, Crysis 2, and Starcraft 2. I’ll be getting Mortal Kombat, Portal 2, and Brink most likely very soon. Currently, I’m trying to beat Bulletstorm and, let me tell you: this game is beautiful (I’d say it’s up there with Battlefield: Bad Company 2, Gears of War 3, and Crysis 2, which I think are good-looking games, IMHO)! The scripting is pretty hilarious too.
I just got the latest Shonen Jump in the mail and I love the current focus on Bleach, Naruto, and Yu-Gi-Oh! though I’m not too keen on One Piece. The June/July 2011 Shonen Jump has a huge Naruto section including the latest official English translations of Shippuden AND classic Naruto! w00t!
Time for some quick Shonen Jump spoilers. Naruto finally gains control over the nine-tails demon fox. He is officially a beast now with the ability to control his chakra and use sage mode efficiently. He also gains his father’s powers.. Yellow flash teleportation FTW! Alas, he still lacks discipline and finesse – got to love Naruto and his blind charisma!
In Bleach there’s not too much action right now. The Soul Society has restructured with new promotions and such. I can’t wait to see what happens next.. I’m really behind on Bleach!
Yusei gets his butt kicked by Jack, the supposed “duel king”. Apparently, Jack’s “sense” is too much for him and he gets punked. Still, Yusei is like a modern-day Yami Yugi so I’m rooting for him! Jack had a vicious finishing combo, including some moves that prevented synchro summons and controlled monster positions – OUCH! It’s always brutal when your opponent has full control.
Now, let me talk about the Gears of War 3 beta. I haven’t been a huge fan of the series even though I love the Unreal Engine (Unreal and Unreal Tournament were two of my favorite shooters of all time without a doubt). Co-op is always fun on GoW but online play just didn’t do it for me. Gears of War 3 seems a lot more polished and fast-paced so I may very well get down with this installment.
The Gears of War 3 multiplayer beta plays a bit like Halo but with more realistic damage, which is great in my book. I love the contextual quick-action controls and, as always, executions are tons of fun (even better than tea-bagging fallen opponents). Folks that are tired of excessive camping brought about by the killstreak mechanic in other popular shooters will be pleased to know that this is an FPS where you have to keep moving, hold down choke points, and work as a team. SCORE!
My one complaint about Gears of War 3 online versus play would have to be that the “power weapons” can be a bit broken. One-shot Gnasher kills can get old quick. As such, the team that defends key points and power-ups tends to win. That said, the action is frentic, fast, and fun. It’s a nice change of pace for a genre with so many entries, especially this year.
So far, I’m only a lowly Level 3 “conscript”. I’ve enjoyed Team Deathmatch. Each team has limited lives which keeps rounds moving quickly. Matchmaking works seamlessly. You can hop into a game in progress in mere minutes. There are some issues with host divergence which brings back the old argument that PC online play is still better, thanks to dedicated servers and player-created content.
With Brink on the horizon, I wonder how well-received Gears of War 3 will be for the masses. I’m all about online play so the story doesn’t do much for me (sadly, I lose interest in campaign/singleplayer modes too easily for any game). To that end, I feel that Gears of War 3 delivers and could very well be a Halo killer, so to speak. More importantly, it keeps the old Unreal Tournament vibe going with gory kills, bot opponents, and lightning-fast action.
All and all, it’s a game worth checking out. If you want early beta access, you’ll need to own Bulletstorm or pre-order Gears of War 3. The beta opens to the public on May 24, I believe. Come find me and my crazy NoF fellows on XBox LIVE. Just add Yogizilla and NoF Roster to meet some cool people and GAME ON!
Phew.. That was a lot to cover in one post.. What are you all playing out there? Any good Anime recommendations? Let me know. I love chatting with my fellow social gaming and Anime/Manga geeks!
